Charlotte’s Response to Hurricane Helene: GPS Capital Markets Steps Up to Help

|

Hurricane Helene, one of the most catastrophic storms in recent history, struck the Big Bend area of Florida’s Gulf Coast on September 26, 2024. As a powerful Category 4 hurricane, Helene unleashed its fury from the Gulf Coast to the mountains of North Carolina. It left a devastating path of destruction. In the days that followed, recovery efforts across the impacted regions began, with local communities and organizations coming together to offer critical aid. Among those responding to the call was GPS Capital Markets’ Charlotte office and Tyler Thurgood, Corporate FX Trading, Automation, Strategy & Advisory at GPS, who took on a hands-on role in helping residents recover from the devastation.

A Community in Crisis

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has been described as nothing short of biblical, with damage estimates reaching billions of dollars and the death toll exceeding 213 people. The storm’s heaviest rainfall was concentrated in the southern Appalachian region, leading to unprecedented flooding. Dozens of weather stations reported record-breaking three-day rainfall totals, with nearly 14 inches of rain falling at Asheville Regional Airport alone—equivalent to nearly three months’ worth of precipitation in just three days. The downpours caused rivers to swell and overflow, inundating homes, businesses, and streets with murky floodwaters.

In the midst of the crisis, members of GPS Capital Markets’ Charlotte office joined forces with other volunteers in Asheville to help with disaster relief efforts. They set up camp at a local middle school and worked processed 4B4BA339 352D 41F6 8C5C 6E236E333D4Cthroughout the weekend, offering much-needed hands-on assistance. “This past weekend, our Charlotte office team members were invited and answered the call to assist with disaster cleanup efforts in Asheville, following Hurricane Helene,” said Tyler Thurgood, who works in Corporate FX Trading, Automation, Strategy & Advisory at GPS. “We camped at a local middle school with other volunteers whose efforts included clearing downed trees, mucking out homes affected by floodwaters, and tarping damaged roofs. This hands-on support not only helps restore essential living conditions for affected residents but also provides relief for overwhelmed residents.”

Addressing the Aftermath: Flooding and Fallen Trees

Thurgood emphasized how unusual the storm was for the region and the difficulties that came with such widespread damage. “The storm was very unusual. The biggest issue continues to be flooding and the massive amount of trees the storm uprooted,” he said. Volunteers from GPS Capital Markets and other organizations faced not only physical challenges but emotional ones, as they helped residents sort through waterlogged belongings and rebuild what was left of their lives. “The Charlotte office’s involvement highlights the importance of coming together during difficult times to make a meaningful impact by offering hope and support to neighbors in need,” said Thurgood.
